GRADUATE DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS
Resources and Assistance for Departments

Overview:

Incoming LGBT students in Ph.D. programs may be eligible for Graduate College Diversity Fellowships based on (1) demonstrated financial need, and (2) the under-representation of LGBT people within the discipline, which has a potential negative impact on the discipline.

Supporting Information:

Empirical studies of LGBT representation within specific disciplines are not generally available. Therefore, we suggest that departments contact their discipline’s professional association, to inquire if the association has an LGBTQ subcommittee that may provide relevant information.

Examples of supporting information provided by professional associations:

• Report on the Status of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Persons in Sociology (2002)
• Recommendations on how to combat anti-LGBT bias in Anthropology, which were submitted to the Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association by the Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Issues (2000)
• Goals of the National Organization of Lesbian and Gay Scientists and Technical Professionals, which indicate the need to create more inclusive and welcoming workplaces.

• U of A has documented the struggles faced by LGBT graduate students (as well as undergraduates, faculty, and staff) on our campus. The “Campus Assessment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Persons” (2001)(a PDF file) may assist you in documenting under-representation and its negative impact.
• The report, “Campus Climate for GLBT People” (2003) (a PDF file), documents struggles faced by LGBT graduate students, undergraduates, faculty, and staff at universities across the nation. This information may also assist you in documenting under-representation and its negative impact.
